There is nothing more frustrating than going to the doctor to find out your kid has a viral infection and there is nothing they can do but recommend sleep and fluids. I hate watching kids suffer and wish I could do more to help them… well there are some things you can do. Essential oils are typically safe for most kids and work wonders in so many ways. Often when there is nothing else that can be done, you will find a solution with essential oils. There are even solutions that can help prevent illnesses. Not only do they help with illnesses, they can also help calm a child down, help a kid fall asleep, keep the bugs away, help with cuts and sunburns, and so much more!
I personally ‘sell’ Young Living oils. I use the term sell losely. I do not do home shows, or attend the ra ra meetings. More power to those that do, I just do not have time. If family or friends, or any of you are interested in purchasing, great, but again, not doing this to make a living… I just believe in it. Young Living is one of the best, but there are a few others that I have heard are good. The key is to look on the bottle and see if they are a theraputic grade, this means they can be ingested. Not all oils are meant for consumption, but some are. So here are a few I recommend to have on hand, linked to how they work and what they can do for you and your kids.
- First you need to have a good set up for application. You will notice that I have not linked Young Living products here. This does not mean that I do not recommend the YL versions, these are just more cost effective. Getting into essential oils is somewhat of an investment. The oils alone are pricey but they go a long way. YL sells ready made solutions for everything. Still I prefer to make them. It’s easy, takes very little time, you just have to know what you are doing.
Diffuser to fill the space with the scent you add to it.
Little glass roller bottles to apply oils
Fractionated Coconut Oil will help dilute the oils.
And now for the Essential Oils!
- The first item you’ll want to get your hands on is Lavender. One of the biggest reasons you will want lavender is that it’s influences sleep and deep relaxation. You can imagine how wonderful this could be for foster children. Spray some on their pillow, put a few drops in their bath water, or diffuse it overnight. It’s also great for skin irritations, cuts, burns, and more. It’s even makes a wonderful bug repellant, which is great for kids who are sensitive to the store bought sprays. Find out more about Lavendar HERE.
- Next is Thieves. Thieves has about 1 million uses, but one of my favorites is the preventative measures you can receive from diffusing it. You can also put it in a roller bottle with your coconut oil and roll it onto the bottom of your feet… this can be used in place of Vicks VapoRub. Our colds go away quicker and are less intense now that we are using it. When I first put the kids in daycare, we saw the kids have a fever for a week. Now they never last more than 24 hours and are much more mild. Find out more about Thieves HERE.
- The third best essential oil to have is Peppermint. It’s great for stomach aches and digestive issues which most kids commonly have. It also relieves headaches, reduces fevers, clears respiritory tract, and relieves tight muscles. Among other great uses, it will also deter all kinds of household bugs, mice, and other pests. Just put a few drops on cotton balls and run them along the baseboards, then drop the cotton balls under your sink, in the trash cans, and other places you might find pests. You can find out a lot more by reading the article HERE.
There are lots of other great oils that do wonders for just about any ailement. However I don’t want to overwhelm you with information. These three should cover most of your bases, but if you have a specific concern, please email me or comment below and I will be happy to look into it!
